April is National Volunteer Month and, since we know how involved Edina residents are in their communities, we are offering up what we think are three amazing volunteer opportunities. No need to drive far – all of these opportunities are located right here in our own backyard.
1. Help our Schools
Sure we have some of the best schools in the state, but to keep them in peak performance requires help – from the community. Edina Community Education is always looking for volunteers and here are a few of the ways you can help:
- Guide the Study Hall at Edina High School.
- Administer AP Tests for Edina students.
- Read books out loud at the Media Center
- Volunteer in a classroom.
- Spend Saturday morning helping out with the Saturday School Program.
If this is something you’d like to do, fill out the volunteer application here.
2. Become a Friendly Visitor
This is a wonderful opportunity for teens as well as adults. The Normandale Center for Healing & Wholeness is seeking folks interested in joining the Friendly Visitor Team. Volunteers will be trained and then matched with a senior who they will visit monthly.
Some of the suggested activities for the volunteer include running errands, walking with the senior, taking the senior out to coffee, help write letters or email and short excursions by car.
Clients of the center not only live in Edina but Eden Prairie, Bloomington, Hopkins and St Louis Park.

3. Create your own Volunteer Experience
If you have certain in-demand skills, whether in construction, web-design, the creative arts, or anything else, consider offering them to the City of Edina. They’ll help find you the ideal volunteer match for your skills.
Have a flair with words? Perhaps a local non-profit needs help creating web content, press releases or marketing materials. If you love to plan and organize the city will help you locate a group that needs those skills as well. The opportunities are limitless.
