The United States Environmental Protection Agency has dubbed January National Radon Action Month as a reminder to Americans that it’s time to check the air in their homes.

Indoor air pollution is a problem nationwide but here in Edina, especially in the winter when our homes are bundled up tight, it can be an even bigger concern. While there are many indoor pollutants in our homes (carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, etc.), one of the dangerous contributors to indoor air pollution is radon, a radioactive gas that can neither be smelled nor seen.

Radon gas forms when rocks emit uranium and radium as they break down. These substances get into your home through even the tiniest of cracks in the foundation. Check out the photo, above. Pretty scary, isn't

Why Rochester on an Edina blog? Rochester, my friend, is the home of “Minnesota’s Craft Beer Boom,” according to The Growler’s Louis Garcia. So, not only can you get world-class medical care in Rochester, but some pretty tasty local brews as well.

Grand Rounds

Last year saw three new brew pubs open in Rochester. Grand Rounds was the first and it opened for business in April of 2015 with a name only the Mayo Clinic pros will get. “We wanted the name of the brewpub to reflect what we’re trying to create – a sense of community, a gathering place, a true neighborhood pub where folks feel welcome, where anyone and everyone can meet and have a good discussion over a pint,” the website claims.

Grand Rounds serves food as well as some tasty craft

While looking at houses for sale in Edina for one of our clients we noticed a number of interesting new listings. This is, by the way a great time to shop for homes. West Village

Built in 1990, West Village is a townhome community located east of Cahill near the intersection with W. 70th. This roomy 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom home has 1,875 square feet of living space. It features an open floor plan with vaulted ceilings, a fireplace, screened porch and a private patio off the master bedroom. We like the oversized laundry room and the private, wooded views. The Shoppes is just one of three shopping areas in downtown Maple Grove. The other two include The Fountains at Arbor Lakes and Main Street. Combined, the three offer more than 220 businesses and boast of “more retail space than anywhere in Minnesota.”

Some of the retailers you will find here include:

  • American Eagle
  • Banana Republic
  • Bath & Body Works

What is it with human beings? We find a lovely place to live, move in and then go about trying to change it. I’m specifically referring to the teardowns going on all over Edina. Although the 2015 numbers aren't out yet, according to the Star Trib's John Reinan, Edina saw a record number of demolition permits issued last year and, in fact, "seven new applications came in on a single day.”

"If Edina isn’t the teardown capital of the country, it’s certainly one of them. In a city of just under 50,000 residents, more than 550 homes were torn down and rebuilt between 2008 and 2014," according to Governing magazine's Alan Greenblatt.

Of course all this demolition has its proponents and opponents. Even some local residents like what's happening. "I

The latest Edina real estate market statistics are out and it appears that it is still relatively stable. Unlike the overheated sellers’ markets in other Twin Cities suburbs, Edina seems to be holding steady in a balanced mode.

New Listings in Edina

One significant change in Edina’s real estate market is that the number of new listings to hit the market increased more than 5 percent, halting a 3-consecutive month decrease over this time last year. This is good news for homebuyers hoping to get into an Edina home for sale before the heated spring buying market.

The number of closed sales increased 21.4 percent, however, which caused a more than 12 percent decrease in the number of available homes for sale in Edina.
