The higher home prices you’ll find within a strong school district’s boundaries are worth it when you consider that homes in these areas hold their value better than schools in poor-performing districts. Whether or not you have children, you can’t go wrong purchasing a home in the award-winning Edina Public Schools District, ISD 273. We don’t know if there’s something in the water in this district or what ― there isn’t a bad school in the bunch.
This month, we take a look at Countryside Elementary School.
Overview of Countryside Elementary
Countryside serves 588 students in grades K through 5 with 33 full time teachers. This gives the school a student/teacher ratio of 17.5:1. Parents laud the supportive teachers and staff.
In addition to the traditional curriculum, the school offers Continuous Progress, an alternative program that offers a child the opportunity to have the same teacher for the entire five year elementary school experience. Other features of the program include:
- Multiaged classrooms and "families"
- Process-oriented instruction
- Cooperative educational approach
If you choose this program, your child will enter elementary school as part of a “family,” where two or three teachers and the family of students remain together over the entirety of the elementary school years.
Other Special Programs
Countryside also offers English as a Second Language classes, a program for the gifted and special education. Furthermore, the district has, on staff, a social worker, an adaptive physical education teacher, deaf/hard of hearing teacher, occupational therapist, psychologist and a speech-language pathologist.
Countryside Test Scores
Countryside Elementary School was awarded 8 out of a possible 10 stars from school ratings site GreatSchools.org and 4 out of 5 stars at SchoolDigger.com.
In 2014, 72.7 percent of Countryside’s 5th graders met or exceeded the math standards on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments Series III (MCA-III). While this is lower than the district’s average (80.9), it far exceeds the state’s average of 61.8.
Fifth grade students improved on the reading portion of the MCA-III from the year before, but still lag the district.
Students at Countryside Elementary will continue their education at Valley View Middle School.
